Welcome to The Dandy Diary 2020
Where to start? To quote Mr. Dickens..”It was the best of times, it was the worst of times!” Certainly it has been the strangest of times. It has brought us great tragedies, heroic deeds and the re-evaluation of our lives and those who share them.
We were all sharing the same fears as people in different countries all over the world. Suddenly we were without family families, without friends, without social contact.Caast adrift on unchartered waters.
We have all searched for the Holy Grail..or as we know it..the Online Supermarket slot where..should you be lucky enoughto get one…you have to be prepared for your fresh chicken to be substituted for a plastic bucket.
We have scurried up and down supermark
et aisles wearing our masks and downcast eyes and apologising for being there. We have fought battles for flour and toilet rolls and in some cases, if we have crossed an an unnoticed line we have been barked at by officious staff..who are just as scared as we are.
Luckily, as a Nation, we have a good sense of humour and it has seen us through the worst of it. Midsommer Murders, Endeavour and Vera have been our constant companions and they have been repeated on a loop until every man, woman and dog in the country has slept through them all. Allan has kept track of the days by wearing an old pack of “Days of the week” underpants he found unopened at the back of the wardrobe. I had the choice of pulling down his jeans to find out what day it was…I never got that desperate to know fortunately.
We have all over indulged. Like most people we have ate our bodyweight in unsuitable foods to compensate. I am 3lb. away from Google Maps putting me down as a small island. My friend went for a blood test and proved Chardonnay positive.
We both got Covid back in March 2020 and Allan was very ill. He lost half a stone in the first week. Couldn’t walk, couldn’t stand, delirious…the whole works. I had it but different symptoms and managed to keep going…the way women do! We isolated for about 16 days and fortunately recovered. I spent most of the Autumn/Winter with a trapped nerve in my shoulder. It did get me out of jury service. I pointed out I would probably be so high on my pain medication I would have let Jack the Ripper off with a reprimand.
We did, however, manage to get some gigs in before we were struck down so I will add them and a few of the photos from them.
We did a couple of gigs in Jan 2020. One was for SUTTON COLDFIELD RAMBLERS at SUTTON COLDFIELD CLUB. They were lovely people and we had a great time with them.
The other gig in Jan was at ARLEY KINGS VILLAGE HALL. This is a little village out the back of Stourport on Severn. Beautiful village hall and well maintained. We have done it about 4 times. Great audience.
We were also lucky enough in January to be able to fly out to GRAN CANARIA to the Riu Palace, Meloneras. Wonderful week of sun and rest for Allan’s Birthday.
We started off the month at one of our favourite venues..HAMMERWICH CRICKET CLUB. We have played there for many, many years. We did the show with our friends, Nicky and Cliff aka ETERNITY DUO. Great to be with so many of our friends there. Really enjoyed the night.
Another gig we did, which was the perfect place to be for Storm Dennis, BEAU DESERT GOLF CLUB…on the middle of Cannock Chase.
We did our usual Valentine’s Gig at WHITTINGTON VILLAGE HALL for Alistair and Margo…and some new Stage Curtains. Such lovely people there. They always make us so very welcome, Really missed doing it this year (2021).
This is a good month for favourite gigs. Saturday night saw us back at NEWPORT BOWLS CLUB where the ladies are having a well earned rest and letting the men do the organising for a change. Good to see our friend, Graham pop in bearing gifts. Bless him. Lovely night.
Posh do over at COPT HEATH GOLF CLUB, Knowle, Solihull. This was a LADIES NIGHT so I had dug out one of my long frocks and suddenly remembered how uncomfortable it was to work in heels. Great audience.
This gig was a local event at the CIVIC BALLROOM CANNOCK. Local Councillor Zaphne Stretton and Mike Holder had chosen as the recipients of their Charity Ball the Birmingham Childrens Hospital. Well attended. Some V.I.P. guests from Datteln, Germany…Cannock’s Twin town. Felt sorry for them trying to understand the Black Country lingo. Lots of people wearing chains of Office and the Sherrif of Stafford were there.
We did our usual yearly gig with MIKE BERRY AND THE OUTLAWS over at KINGS NORTON GOLF CLUB. This is the very popular tribute to BUDDY HOLLY NIGHT. Great to catch up with friends and regulars to this event. Again..it is a gig that has had to be re-scheduled this year for 2022. Good this was such a wonderful night to go out on. Pity I forgot my bag and had to be driven back again next day!!
Another gig we enjoy each time we go is over at ALCESTER UNONIST CLUB. Very small place but the audience are always fab. Missed them this year.
This was a strange gig because I think we were all just starting to realise how serious the situation was. We were over at the SWAN THEATRE WORCESTER on A BLACK COUNTRY NIGHT OUT TOUR with VIVO, OLLY SPENCER, DOLLY and JOE JAMES THOMAS. Audience were great and my old school chums, Roger and Pam Pitt came to see us.
Saturday we did another, much played venue, BELBROUGHTON VILLAGE HALL with our great friend BEV PEGG. Fabulous night and a packed house.
Last gig before we broke up was over again at KINGS NORTON GOLF CLUB for a private party.
The following week we both became ill and had to isolate.
So…a long year but we got through it. We have quite a number of gigs in the book for this year (2021) but obviously they keep being re-scheduled because of Lockdown guidelines. We have some dates in later in the year for A BLACK COUNTRY NIGHT OUT TOUR at various theatres as well as several bookings at Village Halls etc, but at the moment everyones plans are fluid. When details are finalised Allan will get up from in front of the T.V. (possibly) and add them on here in the relevant section. In the meantime I will need to start the promised diet and work on climbing onto a stage again. I will also update the Facebook Page Dandy-Comedy Just for Fun page.
A big thank you to everyone who has kept in touch and supported us. We hope we will be able to get back out and do shows and meet and chat in the new normal. We really miss it. We really miss you.
AND NOW…FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT..
While I have been in Lockdown, like a lot of people, I have taken up old hobbies. One of these was making Art Dolls. Soooo…
This is my Facebook page where I am showing my new dolls. They are OOAK (One of a Kind) soft sculpture dolls. I used to sell these in the 80s at Craft Fairs. The new range is a different direction for me. “The Sisterhood”. They are a celebration of women. The page is new so I will be working towards promoting them more in the near future. They are, unlike me, totally flexible and can sit or stand. They are posed dressed soft sculpture and the bigger dolls are 25inches tall. If you are on Facebook then check them out and give them a like or a share. Would be great.
