WELCOME TO THE DANDY DIARY 2019
Big apologies for starting so late in the year to update the Web Site. Must confess I thought I had typed up the first few months and it had mysteriously vanished into Cyberspace. I was cursing Technology, WiFi, my laptop, Aliens, Allan…. Then I realised I hadn’t done it at all and I was just trying to blame somebody else.
So….After our gig for New Year we had a fairly slow start as we had holidays planned to try to compensate for the hard work from October to December. We sought out some Winter Sun but I , like many others, went down with the Lurgy and spent my holiday in bed and on the balcony wrapped in a blanket and moaning for England.
I shall list the gigs we have done over the past few months and thank people for their hospitality and add some of the photographs underneath. More photos and info. on the Facebook link page…which is temporarily non functional…bit like me, really. It will be up and running soon…unlike me. NO! We have not retired yet , despite bits falling off and life on the road becoming increasingly hazardous…What’s with all the PAPPING!! Have people just discovered car horns? Are we all European? Get a grip folks, this is England. No need for it! As long as we are enjoying it and the audience are enjoying it and people are still asking…then we are still up for it. Details of the Black Country Night Out Theatre Tour to come later…
New Year Show with our friends Nicky and Cliff…ETERNITY DUO. Over at SHIRLEY COMMUNITY CENTRE. Many thanks for a great night again.
Our first gig back was a very special one. This was HAMMERWICH CRICKET CLUB and it was the final gig arranged by the wonderful Ronnie Box. We have worked for Ron…or Veronica…for many, many years. She has done incredible fundraising work within the community and received the British Empire Medal. £812 without Bar takings on the night for new decking and railing around the club. Another wondeful night with our friends ETERNITY DUO, Nicky and Cliff, and as usual, a great crowd. We will return next Feb.
Return gig at NEWPORT BOWLS CLUB. This is about our 10th year and Maureen Cundy and the ladies are giving it up for a while and handing the organising over to George and the lads. Great turn out as always. Thanks again and see you all next year.
Another Bowls Club tonight over at BIRCHES COPPICE for TAMWORTH BOWLS CLUB. We are sharing the stage with the wonderful TAMWORTH TWANGERS who are a Ukelele and Banjo group. Lovely to catch up with my Auntie Rita and Uncle Fred and old friend Carl Dwyer. So sad to hear that Carl has since passed away.
Nice and local at BEAUDESERT GOLF CLUB tonight. Thanks again for another lovely night. See you again next year.
Over at LEOMINSTER at the MASONIC HALL. What a lovely crowd of people. We enjoyed the night with them.
Another repeat venue for us tonight. We have done this for many years. KINGS NORTON GOLF CLUB for the annual TRIBUTE TO BUDDY HOLLY NIGHT with MIKE BERRY AND THE OUTLAWS. Tonight is a sad night for all of us because the originator of this night…DAVID SLATER has very recently died. We attended his funeral just 4 days ago. He was still arranging tonight from his Hospital bed. He is a dreadful loss but it was his wish for the night to continue and hopefully it will.
BLACK COUNTRY NIGHT OUT THEATRE TOUR over at LICHFIELD GARRICK. Great to get together with our B.C. mates, James, Rachel, Katie, Ben, Wayne and Olly Spencer. What a truly wonderful night. A big thank you to all the people who came along to see the show and stopped to chat to us after. It was a Blast.
DERRINGTON VILLAGE HALL. Haven’t been here for a few years but they gave us a good welcome
ASTON WOOD GOLF CLUB for MANEY PROBUS. Many thanks to our old friend, Bob, for asking us to entertain them. Great night.
INKBERROW VILLAGE HALL for a Twinning Fundraiser for a French visit. Thanks to all for a lovely night.
PENKRIDGE VILLAGE HALL for the INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PENKRIDGE. Great crowd. Over £1,000 was raised on the night for various charities. Thanks to all.
Back again tonight at ALCESTER UNIONIST CLUB. I am really struggling with a cold/throat infection but they were such a wonderful crowd it didn’t matter. They are one of the best audiences we get. Love them.
Strange one today. Over at SUTTON COLDFIELD in a very smart Retirement Village to entertain our friend’s mother and her friends on her 90th Birthday. Very honoured to be sharing the day with the legendary GORDON GILTRAP. Good job Allan didn’t take his guitar.
COVEN VILLAGE HALL for BILSTON AND DISTRICT SOROPTOMISTS. Great to catch up with this wonderful crowd again. We have worked for them several times. Have lots of friends among their number. Great to see Jackie and Sue and my old friend, Graham. Some of the money raised on the night was going to GREEN PARK SPECIAL SCHOOL, BILSTON. Big thanks to all.
STUDLEY SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB. This has been hired by the lovely Linda…who we have worked for before. She is a lady that gets things done! This was a fundraiser for the Charity BLESMA…Limbless Veterans Charity. Not sure how much was raised…but knowing Linda..it would b a lot. Great to catch up with Allan’s Auntie Margaret.
HOLY CROSS, LICHFIELD was the venue for a fundraiser organised by John May again to help fund equipment to allow disabled children to enjoy their time in the playground. Many thanks to all of our friends who came along to support this.
NEWCHURCH OLD SCHOOL HALL out at the back of Yoxall. This is a venue we have done many times. Thanks again to Gordon and Rachel for the invite and to the wonderul audience who always come along and make it a great night. Wonderful food..again.
BEAUDESERT GOLF CLUB again…but this time it is for CHASETOWN TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD. Again some familiar faces. Lovely to see you all again.
THE POTTING SHED over at BROMSGROVE for a LADIES GROUP. We have been here before. Lovely venue and the food is good. Great audience. Thanks to Shirley and Ian who had seen us at the ARTRIX THEATRE for booking us. Great to meet up with you.
Reunion of the HOLLY LODGE SCHOOL from SMETHWICK. Venue is the TALLY HO POLICE CLUB, BIRMINGHAM. We haven’t been here for years. The numbers of men slightly outweighed the number of women …80 men and 8 women. I felt a bit odd but they were very well mannered and we knew one or two of them. Lots of compliments at the end which is always nice.
NETHERSEAL VILLAGE HALL out in South Derbyshire. Oh…what lovely people they were. We hadn’t been before but they were so welcoming. Thanks to Robert for suggesting us.
KNOWLE BRITISH LEGION is a venue we know well. We go to watch VIVO and Friends every second Sunday. This is 75th Year commemoration of the D.D.AY LANDINGS and we are booked to appear with our friend KEITH SLATER. We know a lot of the audience and they really rise to the occasion and along with the very talented Keith Slater, make this a wonderful, memorable night. Thanks to John Berry, and all who helped and worked as a team on the night to make this such a successs.
PENCRIC RETIREMENT VILLAGE at PENKRIDGE. This is a return to this venue and so we know a fair few of the faces. Good to catch up and chat with so many of them. See you all next year.
BUTTON OAK VILLAGE HALL. This is out near BEWDLEY. I shall draw a veil over the journeys to and from as they were fraught with harsh words and wrong turns and a lot of time in the dark in the Wyre Forest fearing the imminent crash with a bounding deer. This was mentioned on signs at 2 second intervals. The gig itself was wonderful. Mix of people from village and caravan parks in the area but they all got on well …and importantly for us…liked what we did. Looking forward to seeing them again next year.
HAGLEY GOLF CLUB. This a gig we have done a few times now. We did it again this year with our good friends ETERNITY DUO. This is a Cabaret and Comedy Show where Eternity and ourselves do spots separately and then Nicky and Cliff do some dance music and we work together to do some songs at the end. Really works well. The event was a fundraiser for charity.
ALCESTER SCOUT HUT FOR HOLY TRINITY CHURCH OF ARROW. Lovely night with the people from the Church. Thank you to the Vicar for doing a Video of part of the night.
WOOTTEN WAWEN CLUB is a venue we have visited many times over the years. Lovley to see it doing so well under the care of Tina. Great to see our friends Lynne and Tony there. Many thanks to all for another good night.
Lovely and local tonight over at CHERRY TREE COURT, ESSINGTON. Staff were very welcoming and we had a full house. On the plus side..Allan managed to fix himself up with a Mobile Chiropodist that the ladies recommended. He’s really living the wild life these days. Lovely people there. Good to chat to some of them.
Back at ST. MARK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, BRIDGNORTH. Great night with them again. Lovely to chat to so many of them. Thank you for Al’s Chip Supper. Well done for raising £400 for charity.
Sunday afternoon over at SUTTTON COLDFIELD FOOTBALL CLUB for SUTTON COLDFIELD ROTARY. Brilliant afternoon. So many of them and they really were attentive. So many of tem we knew from ast gigs. Great to catch up with so many old friends.
First night of A BLACK COUNTRY NIGHT OUT THEATRE TOUR and we kick off at THE CORE THEATRE, SOLIHULL. Thanks as usual to Martin and the team. New line up and a great show. Good number in the audience and it all went really well. Very promising start. More on the show later.
Back in our own village of NORTON CANES at the VILLAGE HALL with our friends and fellow Norton residents ETERNITY DUO. What a big crowd we had in. They were running out of chairs. Great to see so many friends there to support us. Many thanks to all.
LAPWORTH VILLAGE HALL is another familiar venue. Last time we were here I had no voice so it is a relief to know I can sing tonight. Our good friends, Celia and Richard have asked us along. So good to see so many friends from Boggery days, College days and Folk Clubdays. Lovely to see Mike Cox from the Timoneers after so many years. Great night.
B.C. NIGHT OUT THEATRE TOUR and we have a Matinee at DUDLEY TOWN HALL. Tricky parking as most of the roads are one way. The Staff were amazing…so helpful. Great to work in such a wonderful old place. Sorry we had to rush off before the end to another gig we already had in the diary.
Race to get back…grab a bite to eat and then straight out again to THE BARNS AT CANNOCK. This was for the SOROPTOMISTS. Again a lot tof them knew us from various events overe the years. Just had time to cath our breath while they had the meal and then we were up for our spot. Great crowd. Thanks so much to all.
B.C. NIGHT OUT and we are trying to get the gear down the steps to the THEATRE ON THE STEPS, BRIDGNORTH… which is situated half way down the steps. VIVO are a 3 piece band…with Drumkit. Anybody who knows Bridgnorth can imagine what that entails. Big thank you to all the people who offered to help. So kind. Not a full house..but it sounded like it. Brilliant audience.
Little village out of the back of Lichfield called SALT. Return visit to the Village Hall there. Lovely audience again. Many thanks to all the people who turned up and supported the event.
Special Birthday party today for lady who has seen us many times. Derek, her husband, has arrange us as a surprise. The occasion was Pauline’s 80th Birthday…though she doesn’t look or seem anything like that age. Venue was the ST. JOHN’S HOTEL, LICHFIELD. Luxury B. AND B. After we set up the equipment we skulked around Lichfield for most of the day in case she spotted us and then we hid in the Breakfast room for the last hour before we were introduced. She was ….luckily…pleased to see us. Thanks to all of her guests for making us so welcome.
Back to LULLINGTON, S. Derbyshire tonight. Terrible night to be out but the audience braved the weather . Lovely supper of Cottage pie, and veg and Apple crumble and custard and great company. I passed on the crumble in case I couldn’t move. Thanks again and look forward to seeing you all again next year.
Sadly MORETON had to be cancelled because of the torrential rain and flooding. The narrow lanes were impassable but luckily a very well organised Patricia and Tony managed to get in touch with everyone.
Monday morning and we set off to COCKSHUTT MILLENIUM HALL for NAFAS…THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FLOWER ARRANGING SOCIETIES. This was the big event for the MERCIA AND NORTH WALES AREA and it was a Forties Vintage Theme. The ladies arranged a magical day of food and entertainment and I’m sure all of the ladies enjoyed it. They all looked lovely and had made a special effort to join in the festivities. Big thanks to Sue and the team and to our fabulous audience.
